Traditional Cheam Charter Fair day celebrated

As you may know the traditional day for Cheam Charter Fair is the 15th May, unless it falls on a Sunday. This year it was decided to move the main fair to Saturday 19th May to tie in with St Dunstan’s Day and the 50th anniversary of Cheam Library. A Saturday also allows those normally at work on a weekday to visit the fair.

Tradition has it that a fair must happen on 15th May or the right to future fairs lapses so six stalls were set up this morning despite the mixed weather. It was pleasant talking to passers by and we were able to hand out programmes to those unfamiliar with the fair, plus a few who hadn’t noticed the date of the main fair had changed.

Thanks to the stall holders who turned out, including Friends of Whitehall and Friends of Nonsuch. There were also two plants stalls which added colour to the event and took advantage of the rain showers to refresh their stock. All will be back on Saturday for the main event.
